Downey's Take
Crude down sharply on recovering Middle East export flows and signs of easing supply concerns after Thursday's price surge. There have been five big stories in oil this week:
*1. On Weds morning Russia extended its diesel export ban through Oct 31,
*2. OPEC+ is likely to “officially” hold November quotas steady when they meet over the coming weekend (secretly all members want to, and most are, selling more to make up for lost revenue in 2026).
*3. Early Thurs (yesterday) morning China suspended October fuel exports.
*4. Also Thurs morning Washington had told Germany and France to release emergency diesel or face a US export ban. EU energy blindness continues to hurt that region from all directions.
*5. On Thurs 2:32 pm ET, Bloomberg reported a third US carrier and about 10,000 more troops heading to the Gulf. This is an additional carrier group. So new US Iran situation now looking more permanent.
Isobutane up $0.137 (+9.7%), N-Butane up $0.082 (+6.0%) and Pentane up $0.093 (+4.6%), all on Saudi Aramco and Sonatrach raising October LPG contract prices.
Dutch TTF European nat gas down $2.00 (-2.7%) on milder weather forecasts curbing demand and ample LNG supplies.
Coffee up $5.6 (+2.0%) on short covering after recent declines.

Oil falls on EU diesel stock talks easing tightness
Anushree Mukherjee · Reuters · Fri, Oct 2, 2026
Brent fell about 3% to near $99.50/bbl and WTI dropped over 3% as EU countries discussed releasing 50 million barrels of diesel plus IEA crude stocks in response to US pressure, easing refined-product tightness. Middle East crude flows continue recovering while China’s October fuel export suspension and a third US carrier deployment keep risk premiums in place. The moves highlight that the core stress has shifted from crude to diesel and other refined products. Read →
