Downey's Take
Brent $109.86, up $1.07 (+1.0%) and WTI $98.97, up $1.15 (+1.2%) this morning on ongoing Iranian tanker strikesand Houthi attacks on Saudi, as well as an unexpectedly large US API inventory drawdown.
Volatility yesterday (Tuesday) was driven by an unconfirmed report that a US Iran deal was close (which knocked Brent down as much as 3% at one point), followed by statements from a diplomat and others that such reports were inaccurate and that talks continue but no agreement is near. Brent traded in a range of more than $6.
Dutch TTF European nat gas up $3.18 (+3.7%) on Middle East hostilities tightening LNG supplies and low European storage ahead of winter.
Palladium down $20 (-1.8%) on persistent investment outflows and higher-for-longer US rate expectations weighing on non-yielding metals.
Cocoa down $105 (-1.8%) on expectations of improved West African supply and softer global demand.
Nickel up $268 (+1.7%) on prospects of coordinated Indonesian output cuts tightening supply.
Tin up $718 (+1.4%) on easing US rate-hike expectations and low inventories supporting the metal amid AI-driven demand.

Mild weather outlook sends US natgas futures to two-week low.
US natural gas futures for November delivery fell 6.5 cents or 2.1% to $2.99/MMBtu on Tuesday, hitting the lowest level since October 2. Forecasts for warmer-than-normal temperatures through early November cut expected heating demand, outweighing support from robust LNG exports averaging 18.2 Bcf/d and Lower 48 output at 111.4 Bcf/d. LSEG data showed next-week demand rising only to 110 Bcf/d, well below the five-year average of 117 Bcf/d.

EU storage hits 74.6% full, 15pp below norm
EU underground gas storage stood at 74.6% full (845 TWh) on gas day Oct 19, 2026, down from 82.8% a year earlier and 16 to 17pp below the five-year seasonal average. Germany (61.2%) and the Netherlands (64.7%) lag most among major markets, while Poland nears full. The shortfall limits the buffer against winter demand and LNG supply risks, keeping upward pressure on TTF as injection season ends.

TTF at €86.65/MWh as EU storage lags
Dutch TTF settled near €86.65/MWh on Oct 20 (down 1.23% d/d but up 8.5% over 30 days), with EU storage at 74.6% (-17.4pp vs norm). JKM at $29.55/MMBtu creates a $1.87 to 1.98/MMBtu Asian premium that diverts flexible Atlantic cargoes eastward. Low storage and tight LNG flows support TTF as Europe heads into winter with limited refill room.

JKM premium over TTF sustains Asia pull
JKM spot traded at $29.55-$30.01/MMBtu, holding a $1.87-$1.98/MMBtu premium to TTF-equivalent prices and keeping Atlantic-basin cargoes competitive for Asia. US Gulf exports remain the swing supplier but face elevated competition; Qatar volumes stay curtailed by Hormuz issues. The spread directly constrains European LNG send-out and reinforces storage-driven price support.

Half of India's coal plants critically low on fuel amid demand surge
Sethuraman NR ·
Reuters · Tue, Oct 21, 2026, 1:25 AM ET
As of Oct 19, 96 of India's 191 coal-fired power plants held critically low stocks (under three days' supply), up from 60 in mid-September per Central Electricity Authority data. Total power plant coal stocks fell 5% since early October while daily peak demand ran 45 to 50 GW above year-ago levels due to hotter weather and lower hydropower output. Coal-fired generation rose 13.3% YoY in September yet the power deficit hit its highest level since August 2023, pressuring thermal coal demand and import needs despite domestic supply efforts.

Wheat leads grains lower on peace hopes, harvest catch-up
December wheat fell 1.9% to $6.42 3/4 a bushel on the CBOT as peace-talk sentiment in the Black Sea and Middle East reduced risk premiums. Corn dropped 1.2% to $4.61 1/2 and soybeans 0.5% to $12.47 1/2. USDA crop progress showed soybean harvest at 64% complete (vs. 65% five-year average) and corn at 44% (vs. 52%), with dry weather expected to accelerate fieldwork; a fresh 612,000-metric-ton USDA-confirmed soybean sale to China for 2026 to 27 provided partial support.

Mosaic idles Florida phosphate plant, lays off 199 over sulfur shortage.
Mosaic filed a WARN notice to idle its South Fort Meade phosphate operations for over six months starting Dec 8, citing global sulfur shortages tied to Strait of Hormuz shipping disruptions and Iran-related conflict. The move cuts 199 jobs and follows prior curtailments at other sites. Sulfur prices above $1,000 per ton raise phosphate production costs, pressuring output and contributing to elevated fertilizer prices for farmers.
