Downey's Take
Brent holds $96 (WTI $92), but upward momentum from earlier in the week has stalled as Trump commented Weds evening at 5:27pm ET that he does not expect the latest bombing campaign to last “much longer,”. Note separately OPEC+ meeting on Sat 5th. Expected to hold quotas steady after completing unwinding the 1.65 million bpd 2023 cuts. The fact that actual Gulf exports remain constrained by the Iran conflict, mean quota changes have had limited physical impact so far. More importantly the independent capacity assessment (DeGolyer and MacNaughton report due late September) will set the stage for contentious 2027 baseline/quota negotiations (Iraq and others want higher allocations).
Wheat down $26 (-3.3%) on profit-taking ahead of USDA WASDE report and easing Black Sea risk premiums.
Sugar down $0.44 (-2.4%) on profit-taking after recent supply-driven rally to multi-month highs.
Corn down $11 (-2.0%) on profit-taking ahead of private crop estimates and USDA report.
Iron Ore up $1.7 (+1.8%) on Chinese steel mill restocking.
Palladium up $25 (+1.8%) on short-covering amid supply concentration concerns.
Kicker: Long copper short aluminum Dec27 spread on mine supply constraints versus Chinese overseas aluminum capacity growth, per Goldman Sachs.

EU storage hits decade lows at 65% full, driving TTF to €74/MWh.
EU gas storage stood at 65.39% of capacity (71.5 bcm) at end-August, 16.76 points below the five-year average and the lowest for the date since 2011 per GIE data. August net injections were only 9.2 bcm (9% below year-ago) with record summer withdrawals from heat-driven power demand. Front-month TTF reached €73.80/MWh on Sep 2, up 28% month-on-month and 130% year-on-year, as Asia competes for scarce cargoes while Europe heads into winter with thin buffers.

Europe's gas storage at 65% full, lowest end-summer level in 15 years.
EU storage facilities are only 65% full, the lowest toward end-summer in at least 15 years, after buyers delayed purchases betting the Iran war would end and prices would fall. Companies have been reluctant to fill tanks expecting Qatar to resume normal Hormuz shipments. This leaves Europe vulnerable to winter spikes if cold weather or further supply issues hit.

Europe sees more negative power prices from solar
Negative electricity prices rose in the first half of 2026 across major European markets including EPEX SPOT zones, up about 2% from 2025 records and over 13 times 2022 levels, driven by high solar output exceeding midday demand. France saw the most negative hours due to strong nuclear baseload; Germany experienced wider spreads supporting battery economics with daily peaks above €650/MWh. The trend pressures solar PPAs and accelerates storage deployment as evening scarcity pricing intensifies from gas-fired ramping.

Australia's Lynas Rare Earths, the largest non-Chinese rare earths producer, confirmed it held takeover discussions earlier in 2026 that ended without a deal due to high uncertainty. The talks led Lynas to suspend its CEO search following Amanda Lacaze's June retirement, with interim CEO Pol Le Roux in place and the process ongoing. Lynas continues expanding its global supply chain, including talks for new mine supply and U.S. magnet support, as it reports record prices and profit amid Western efforts to diversify from China.

China adds MP Materials, USA Rare Earth to export control list
China's Ministry of Commerce added MP Materials and USA Rare Earth, key U.S. firms backed by Pentagon funding, to its export control list, banning shipments of certain rare earth metals and dual-use items in retaliation for U.S. actions. The move targets heavy rare earths like dysprosium critical for magnets in EVs, defense, and autos, where China dominates supply. It escalates tensions over permanent-magnet supply chains and U.S. friend-shoring initiatives.

China blacklists MP Materials and USA Rare Earth over dual-use exports
Beijing placed MP Materials, USA Rare Earth, and eight other U.S. entities linked to the military on its export control list, halting dual-use rare earth and related exports in response to U.S. restrictions on Chinese firms. The full ban tightens prior licensing rules and affects mine-to-magnet chains for neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium. Analysts view it as largely symbolic retaliation but a clear signal on supply chain leverage.
